Craig Patterson

Executive Chairman

Craig is an accomplished insurance executive with extensive international experience across underwriting, claims, reinsurance, and insurance leadership in Australia, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom.

Prior to GARD, Craig was General Manager of Austagencies, the underwriting arm of listed broker Austbrokers (now AUB). During this time, he established AustRe, the group's reinsurance vehicle, and led the rebranding of Austagencies to SURA, growing the business into one of Australia's largest managing general agents.

Toby Guy

Chief Executive Officer

Toby has over 25 years in insurance working in insurance, reinsurance and MGA operations including 20 years in senior domestic & international management roles.

As Chief Executive Officer of GARD, Toby focuses on business growth through mergers and acquisitions, start-ups, and the development of niche specialty products. He leads operational strategy, supports the development of underwriting talent, and ensures initiatives are commercially sound and sustainable.

Toby has held various positions of increasing responsibility in underwriting, strategic and financial planning, operations, and business transformation across all lines of corporate insurance. This includes CEO of Tokio Marine Australia, Executive Director of Chase Accident & Health, BCC, General Manager of Austagencies / Sura and roles at Great Lakes and Munich Re.

Craig Walker

Managing Director - Gard Liability

Craig has over 30 years’ experience in the insurance industry covering the full spectrum of insurance and reinsurance functions. This experience ranges from large international and Australian companies to emerging underwriting agencies.

In his most recent role, Craig took care of a large Australia wide portfolio which contained all Public and Products Liability lines of business. In this capacity Craig was instrumental in setting up the underwriting guidelines, co-ordinating binder renewal and negotiations and managing a large team of senior underwriters and support staff.

Craig has demonstrated the ability to continually run and grow profitable portfolios and is an accomplished and well respected figure in all states and territories in Australia and with security partners here and abroad.

Here at GARD Insurance, Craig is continuing to do what he does best, underwriting harder and more technical liability accounts including incidental Professional Indemnity exposures for the Australian broker market and their clients.

Darren Maher

General Manager - Gard Hospitality & Leisure

Darren has more than 40 years of experience in the Australian insurance market, having held senior executive roles with major national insurers including IAG, Suncorp and their predecessor organisations.

Before joining GARD in January 2025, Darren was Group Chief Underwriting Officer at Insurance Australia Group. His career spans both Commercial and Personal lines, across intermediated and direct distribution channels.

Darren brings strong experience in underwriting leadership, strategy development and delivery, governance and risk management, portfolio oversight, and stakeholder engagement, supporting sustainable and well-managed growth.

Michael Huntly

General Manager - Gard Bus and Coach

Michael has more than 46 years' experience underwriting and managing Property, Liability, Construction, Motor and Financial lines portfolios in CEO, Chief Underwriter and National Underwriting Manager roles for NZI, Royal SunAlliance, Vero, Calliden, Austagencies, Australian Bus and Coach Underwriting (ABCU), 360 Construction and Ensurance Underwriting. Michael has been a Coverholder at Lloyd’s since 2013.

Michael's focus is currently managing various binders in their start-up phase, exercising underwriting control, oversight, and stakeholder management ensuring positive binder outcomes with our underwriting partners.

Gretchen Gudopp

Compliance Manager

Gretchen has extensive international experience across underwriting, reinsurance broking, compliance, and operations. She leads the underwriting function for the organisation’s New Zealand operations while also overseeing underwriting controls and compliance activities across the Australian business.

With a strong background in governance, risk management, and operational oversight, Gretchen plays a key role in supporting disciplined underwriting practices, regulatory compliance, and sustainable business growth.

Gretchen previously held MGA leadership roles in the UK, where she contributed to the strategic and sustainable development of a large insurance business. She also brings significant mutual management experience, together with a strong technical foundation gained at Benfield as a Treaty Broker and at RSA and Aviva in underwriting management positions.
